The Ultimate Beginner’s Guide to Sheet Mask

Published on

A kind of face mask which has gained a lot of popularity in recent times, sheet mask has become a part of many people’s ‘self-care routine’. Sheet masks originated from Japan and South Korea where people used a cloth dipped in homemade serums to rejuvenate their skin and fight signs of ageing.

With the ever-growing industry, it is not unusual for us to feel overwhelmed by all the options available in the market and make you wonder what the differences are and which one will suit your skin type and concern best. You don’t have to worry because we will give you a comprehensive guide on sheet masks.

What exactly does a sheet mask do?

Sheet masks contain high concentration of hydrating ingredients which helps create a seal on your skin that prevents the moisture from escaping and helps to make your skin look healthy and radiant.

What ingredients are in a sheet mask?

Now a days, you can find sheet masks including a number of effective ingredients. Everything from aloe vera and green tea to hyaluronic acid and glycerin can be found in sheet masks. Ahead, a list of ingredients that are helpful for different skin types and concerns.

  • For normal to dry skin types: Those who have normal to dry skin types may reach for sheet masks that contain plumping and moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, avocado, shea butter, squalane or sweet almond oil.
  • For oily and combination  skin: Look for active ingredients like AHAs/BHA, witch hazel or tea tree in a sheet mask if you have combination or oily skin.
Try adding over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid based acne face washes to your regimen, as well as other topicals with active ingredients, such as niacinamide or adapalene to help treat and prevent acne flare-ups. Make sure all the products that you use are labeled “non-comedogenic”, so that you do not end up clogging your pores.
  • For sensitive skin: Look for non-fragranced, alcohol free sheet masks with soothing and calming ingredients like aloe vera, allantoin, green tea, centella and chamomile extract.
  • For skin brightening: Whether you main concern is to fade hyperpigmentation or to even out and lighten up overall skin tone, look for sheet masks with brightening ingredients like niacinamide, rice water, potatoes, lemon, honey, rose, cherry blossom, blueberry, vitamin c, arbutin or tranexamic acid.
  • For smoothing and firming: If you’re looking for sheet masks with anti-aging benefits, look for emollient ingredients such as snail mucin, collagen, honey, seaweed, ginseng or collagen.

How to properly use a sheet mask?

First, cleanse your skin with a facial cleanser of your choice. Next, apply face toner to balance your skin’s pH level and help open your pores to receive the benefits of your sheet mask. Now place the sheet mask on your face and leave it on for about 15-20 minutes. After you peel the mask off, take the time to massage in any remaining serum with your fingers. Once the serum has fully absorbed into your skin, apply a lightweight moisturizer to seal in the active ingredients.

  • If you leave the sheet mask on your face for too long, it will start drying out and will cause the sheet mask to start reabsorbing all the serum that has just been deposited on your face. So always remove a sheet mask while it’s still moist.
  • Do not rinse your face after taking the sheet mask off unless it’s stated on the package as it may remove all the wonderful serum that provides the sheet mask benefits you’re after. If there is excess serum on your face, take some and massage it on your neck, hands or even feet.
